You may have been thinking about it for a long time, but maybe you haven’t taken the plunge yet. America is THE country that has everything to offer in the broadest sense. It is not for nothing that they call it “The American Dream.” Freedom and equality are of paramount importance to the people of America. Anyone can become prosperous, regardless of your origin, if you work hard enough for it. If you’re considering the prospect you can read ahead as we explain exactly what you need to be able to emigrate and how the relocation works.
What do you need to be able to emigrate?
To be able to emigrate to America you need to have a Green-card. This allows you to stay in America permanently. The Green Card gives the same rights, duties and benefits as a US citizen, with the exception of voting rights. Unfortunately it is nowadays more difficult to get a Green-card since President Trump came into power. If you have family living in America, you can quickly qualify for a Green-card, but Trump wants to stop this. He has plans to introduce new conditions.
Requirements for obtaining a Green-card
Now you may be wondering which requirements you must meet in order to still be able to get a Green-card. To have the best chance of a Green-card you need:
to be between 26 and 30 years old
to be able to speak English fluently
to have a high education
to have been offered a job in America and preferably also to have a ‘Nobel Prize’ or an Olympic medal
With this, Trump wants to ensure that the American economy benefits. These demands have not yet been passed, the Senate has not yet given its approval. There is also the possibility to take part in the Green-card lottery, where you have the chance to be drawn for a permanent residence permit.
Another way to get a residence permit is to marry an American citizen. By means of a K1 visa (also known as an engagement visa) you can go to America to marry each other there. It is a requirement that you have a real marriage within three months. To exclude that it is not a sham marriage, you may not get divorced in the first three years. After those three years you can possibly apply for a residence permit which can later be converted into American citizenship.
Be an investor
Do you have a lot of money? Then you are lucky! America is in fact fond of people with a lot of money who want to invest in the American economy. A million in your pocket? Then a residence permit (EB5 visa) is already within reach. They use the money to create jobs. A requirement is that you at least hire 10 employees. A minimum investment is $150,000 with which you can get an E1 or E2 visa and thus possibly qualify for a residence permit, but not a permanent status.
Every year 50,000 Green-cards are raffled and participation in this lottery is free. To compete in this lottery, you must submit the application online to US Department of State Diversity Green-card Lottery. Make sure that the application is submitted correctly without errors. The request can be rejected without mercy due to a small error. You can also have the application submitted by a specialized company. Once you have been drawn by lottery and emigrate to America, there will be costs involved. This includes consular costs, costs for medical examinations and costs for translating official documents that you must be able to submit.
If you work for a US employer, you can also get a residence permit. However, that is only possible if you have worked in America for a number of years on a L1 visa. You can then apply for a residence permit through a special process.
Making the move
Have you been able to get a green-card? Then the time has finally come, and you can move! But how does it all work, you might wonder. Because which things do you take with you and how do you get your things in America? Most of the houses are furnished in America. So first find out what you really need. Items that you want to send must be moved to America by boat or plane. Fortunately, there are many international moving companies that specialize in this and can help you with this. It is important to compare these companies because the prices vary considerably.
